T he Precambrian metamorphic, Phanerozoic sedimentary, and Tertiary igneous rocks of the Black Hills set the stage for the field course. They provide a varied and challenging setting for the instruction and practice in geologic mapping at various scales, using topographic maps, and aerial photographs as base maps.
The course includes preparation of stratigraphic columns, geologic maps, structural cross sections, and completion of formal reports for selected locations in the Black Hills. Successive projects involve greater geologic complexity, and one project will emphasize assessment of mineral resources. Practical applications to environmentally related problems and hydrogeology are emphasized.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisites include: completion of junior year of study, Physical Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphy/Sedimentation, and Structural Geology, or consent of the Director
Geology professors and staff from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and other universities.
